Luxembourg celebrates Kleeschen day in Shanghai

Publié le mercredi 10 décembre 2014

On December 6th the Consulate of Luxembourg in Shanghai celebrated for the first time ‘Kleeschen’ day with children of Luxembourg community and business community.

During this event, Consul general Luc Decker told the legend of Saint Nicolas to children before leaving him the floor. Kleeschen came directly from Luxembourg the hands full of gifts, he rewarded around 20 kids that proved to have been kind during this year and enjoyed some traditional cakes, drinks and music before continuing his tour.

As part of the generosity spirit that surrounds this period of the year, gifts and funds were also raised from the Luxembourg community for some less fortunate children in Shanghai. As such, the consulate brought Saint Nicolas to a local migrant children’s school [1] on December 10th.  The kids were thrilled to hear Mr Decker telling them the story of the Kleeschen and very excited to see him in person with all those gifts. Saint Nicolas was also rewarded as the children prepared dances and songs to welcome and thank him. He for sure received lots of smiles and laughter.

[1] The children of migrant workers move with their parents to become temporary residents in urban centers like Shanghai. Due to their families’ low economic and social status, living standards can be extremely low. Lack of integration with the local population also leads to prejudice and discrimination.
