Jean-Claude Juncker elected President of the European Commission
On July 15th, The European Parliament has elected former Luxembourg Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker as the new leader of the 28-nation bloc's executive arm.
With 422 votes out of the 729 total cast in the secret ballot, Mr Juncker was well over the 376 votes minimum that he needed. There were 250 votes against him, 47 abstentions and 10 spoilt ballots
Mr. Juncker will take over as European Commission President in November from the incumbent, Jose Manuel Barroso of Portugal. The results were announced by the parliament's president, Martin Schulz. Juncker says he will use his 5-year-term to promote policies fostering growth and reducing rampant unemployment in Europe.
On June 27th, EU leaders already proposed former Luxembourg Premier to head the European Commission.
