Happy Liichtmëssdag!
The Luxembourg celebration of Liichtmëssdag falls on 2 February and is based on a mix of religions and pagan custom; it is known in other countries as St Brigid’s Day, celebrating fertility and purity, following the winter season. Traditionally, farmers paraded with lit torches, asking St Brigit to make their land fertile for the coming season.
On Liichtmëssdag, Luxembourg children walk outdoors carrying their lit lanterns and singing Léiwer Härrgottsblieschen, seeking gifts of sweets (traditionally it was peac and bacon, not sweets).
