Did You Know? Luxembourg steel used in prestigious Chinese Skyscrapers

Publié le lundi 28 juillet 2014

What is one common feature between Shanghai’s Jin Mao Tower, World Financial Centre as well as the New Poly Plaza Tower in Beijing? They were all built using steel produced in Luxembourg!

ArcelorMittal Luxembourg is indeed internationally renowned for its state of the art construction steel. The strength and durability of Histar® steel jumbo beams has been used not only in China’s iconic landmarks but also in other major cities around the world like the Hearst Tower in New York, the Emirates Tower in Dubai, as well as New York’s One World Trade Center, formerly known as the Freedom Tower.

The expertise originates in the long-lasting national experience in the steel industry, which started in the 1840s with the discovery of phosphoric iron ore deposits. In 1911, the merger of several steelworks formed the ARBED group, a success story of its own, which merged in the early 2000s with two Spanish and French companies to form Luxembourg-based Arcelor. In 2006, the Mittal Steel group approached Arcelor, they merged to become today’s world leading steel company. ArcelorMittal, headquartered in Luxembourg, supplies all major markets with quality steel products, is present in more than 60 countries and has an industrial footprint in over 20 countries.

In the history of our country, the steel industry has been of paramount importance. It became the basis of the Luxembourg economic success story; it changed the demographic structure of the country and ultimately put the Grand Duchy on the international map. Actually, in the aftermath of the Second World War, Luxembourg was, despite its size, an important actor on the European steel market. Thanks to the prominent role in the steel production, Luxembourg became a founding member of the six-country European Coal and Steel Community, the forerunner of the European Union.

So Luxembourg holds on to its steel, which can be found in most financial districts around the globe. But today, and not only in those districts, Luxembourg is above all known and respected for its expertise in financial affairs.
