New Minister of Economy and Foreign Trade
On January 31, 2012, Etienne Schneider was sworn in as a new member of the government by HRH the Grand Duke, in the presence of Prime Minister Jean-Claude Juncker, at the grand ducal palace.
Etienne Schneider took office at the helm of the Ministry of Economy and Foreign Trade on 1 February 2012, succeeding Jeannot Krecké who had earlier resigned from this post.
Mr Schneider was born in 1971 and is a trained Economist with a bachelor's degree from the highly regarded Institut Catholique des Hautes Etudes Commerciales (ICHEC) in Brussels, Belgium as well as a degree in commercial and financial sciences from Greenwich University in London.
His political career includes responsibility as an alderman in his home city of Kayl (2006-2010), where he was in charge of financial affairs. Between 1995 and 2004, he was leading advisor to the Socialist Labor Party group in Luxembourg's parliament, after having previously served as research assistant at the European Parliament in Brussels.
Since 2004 he held a position as First Counselor in the Ministry of Economy and Foreign Trade, where he focused on economic development, infrastructure and energy policies and most recently assumed responsibility for the Directorate General of Economic Development, Industry and Business. He also served on the executive board of several important companies. In addition, since 2010, he held the postion of vice-chairmain of the National Credit and Investment Company (Société Nationale de Crédit et d’Investissement – SNCI).
